Sumi-e Painting Workshop
August 8th & 9th

Sumi-e is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting “sumi” is the ink and “e” is painting. East Asian painting and writing developed together in ancient China using the same materials - brush and ink on paper. Emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush.

The philosophy of Sumi-e is contrast and harmony, expressing simple beauty and elegance. Sumi-e attempts to capture the Chi or “life spirit” of the subject, painting in the language of the spirit. A Sumi-e artist becomes the rose to paint it.

Spirit and individuality are at the heart of Sumi-e painting. Making each stroke the most beautiful. It is an “immediate” painting. The idea is not to make a preliminary sketch, but to create a beautiful scene from your memory and paint the emotion of it using the Sumi-e language. Sumi-e helps the artist remember and then convey beautiful things so that they may be shared with others.

Ann will touch on the basic strokes known as "The Four Gentleman", from these four strokes all things can be created.  Perfect for beginners!
