Many kids dream of becoming a rock star. The lure of the lights, the roar of adoring crowds and the exhilarating beats are almost irresistible for some. While the fantasy might feel unattainable, the musicians at Temple Israel’s Shul of Rock summer camp are discovering their inner rocker and living that dream.

Their band is called Pentagon, and 7-year-old Stella Rosen explains the genesis for the name. “There are five sides on a pentagon and there are five people in the band.” During the school year, these band mates play together in Temple Israel’s after-school music program, which welcomes participants of all ages and skill levels. As an extension, the summer camp was created so young musicians could continue to hone their skills and expand their repertoire.

These campers are playing all the instruments you might expect, including drums and electric guitar, but unexpectedly, they’re composing their own music. On the piano, Stella and a friend wrote the main idea for the song “Before the Storm,” which was further developed by the band. Stella’s 12-year-old brother, Ezra Rosen, said, “We added in different things like drums and such and we have what we have now.”
