Five-year-old Dorothy Matthews could barely contain her zeal for a new joke.

She provided the setup: “Did you hear about the actor who fell through the floor?”

Then, with the comedic timing of a seasoned stand-up, she delivered the punchline: “It was just a stage he was going through.”

Dorothy’s quip was perfectly suited for the weeklong I’m a Star summer camp she was attending. Hosted by the Oasis Center for Women and Girls, the Girls Can Do Anything program offers a series of camps, each with a different theme. This camp focused on the performing and visual arts while empowering girls, ages 5-15, to dream big. Campers had the opportunity to take field trips, sing, dance, act, write, paint, and create music on instruments they made themselves. The girls were also introduced to women who are practicing artists and enjoy creative careers. One of the highlights of the camp was the downtown public art walk, led by the Council on Culture & Arts.

Through this special event, campers not only were able to learn more about the artworks in their community, but also got to meet and speak with Susan Stelzmann, the creator of one of the artworks on the route.

Stelzmann is a ceramicist who designed and produced the Gaines Street Tree Wall mosaic mural. The piece captivated many of the camper, s including 12-year-old Aliya Greyer who said, “I loved the glaze on the leaves and the texture.”
