A splash of color wraps around the corner of S. Macomb and W. Pensacola streets, greeting pedestrians and motorists alike with its vivid, abstract scenes.

“Once Upon a Daydream,” is the newest mural to join the City of Tallahassee’s Graffiti Abatement Mural Program, supported by the City’s Sustainability and Community Preservation department and the Council on Culture & Arts. The mural comes from the interminable imagination of artist Michael Crowne. 

When painting the large-scale work, Crowne noticed car passengers watching him unravel the piece from his brush. He noted how their eyes looked from their phones to the red stoplight to the wall and back again, and could see them attempt to piece together the emerging image and parse out its meaning. 

“I love philosophy and psychology, and I want the things that I make to make you think and ask questions,” says Crowne. “We’ve been very privileged in today’s world to not have to use our imaginations because technology does it for us. We’ve lost the art of thinking and figuring out puzzles.”
