Velma Frye is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with a strong background in classical and popular styles. With a degree in piano pedagogy and a curiosity about popular music, this promotion led to many years of performing, including nine visits to Lake Wobegon on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” Her varied work has included producing/hosting a live performance series for public television, representing Tallahassee's Sister City Program with a solo concert in Krasnodar, Russia, followed by two concerts in Germany (and some pub singing in Ireland), anchoring a monthly public radio show for several years as the house band and soloist, earning a master’s degree in music education, recording six solo CDs, teaching jazz history at a junior college, and composing many songs sung around the world in university and community choirs. While continuing to perform, record, and teach piano, Velma leads loyal groups of women’s singing circles, and offers retreats for the contemplative and exuberant use of the voice.
