The Rocking Chair Horse

The Rocking Chair Horse is an original award-winning play written by Bev DeMello. This staged workshop has been conceptualized by Michelle Nickens and Theresa Prow Davis. In The Rocking Chair Horse, daughters accept and reject parts of their mothers’ narratives, bringing them anxiety as well as happiness in a family with generations spanning over 100 years. To signal each daughter’s passage into adulthood, the respective mother bequeaths a special heirloom—the family’s antique rocking chair. As each mother leaves the rocking chair to her daughter, she also passes along her personal history, a sense of connection, and a hope that her daughter’s accomplishments will be greater than her own. The tradition continues, until one daughter destroys the heirloom and shatters traditional gender roles. Will a mother grant her daughter “permission,” ultimately altering the themes that have been passed down through generations?
