The African Diaspora Experience in Early Florida

Funded in part by the Florida Humanities Council, this FREE presentation by Prof. Anthony Dixon is open to the public. “Florida has a relationship with African descendants unlike any other state. This relationship has had a direct impact on the growth of Florida. Throughout each period of Florida history there is a significant presence of the African diaspora. Prof. Dixon discusses this relationship by utilizing both broad and specific topics from 1513 to the present.”  Dr. Anthony Dixon, author of Up From Incarceration, and the textbooks Florida’s Negro Wars and A Timeline of the African Diaspora Experience, is a professor of history at Florida A&M University. Once incarcerated for more than five years, he turned his life around and earned a Ph.D. in history from Indiana University.
