Square Dance Beginning Lessons

Now is your opportunity to learn how to square dance! Square dancing requires lessons to learn the steps, from the basic to the intricate. The local Capital Twirlers square dance club will be offering their annual square dance lessons at the Tallahassee Senior Center.

Today’s Square Dancing revives the old “barn dance” style with a modern twist. It is characterized by dancers forming “squares” of four couples who dance specific movements cued by a caller. These are combined to keep the dance interesting and sometimes challenging! Country, classic rock, top 40’s, gospel, golden oldies and even classical music are adapted to present day square dancing. No fancy footwork is required. Instead, you step in time with the music as you form moving patterns with the other dancers in your square – following the caller’s instructions. It’s easy to learn. Classes are conducted by Elmer Sheffield, who has been teaching square dance for over 40 years and is one of the best known and respected callers in the country.

Square dancing is a fun and delightfully energetic activity. You will be smiling within minutes and leave the lessons laughing and want to keep on dancing.  Wear comfortable clothes.  Please bring a partner if you can. Lessons last 15 weeks.  $2 per person per lesson
