Secrets of Spanish Florida - Free Film

Mission San Luis and the Museum of Florida History are proud to announce the start of a seven-part lecture series highlighting the important history of Spanish colonies in Florida.

For the first installment of the series, join us at Mission San Luis for a FREE reception and screening of an episode from the popular PBS show “Secrets of the Dead.”

For centuries Jamestown and Plymouth have been known as the first permanent European settlements, where English Protestants sought freedom from religious persecution. Evidence from manuscripts, archaeological evidence, and interviews from Florida Natives now prove that the first European settlement was established in 1565, by the Spanish, in La Florida. These settlements were a melting pot of individuals from Africa, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
