Located in southwest Georgia less than a 3 hour drive from Tallahassee is the infamous Andersonville Civil War prison site. In no small part due to its notoriety as the prison with the highest death rate of the war, numerous books and articles have been written by various historians describing the people and the conditions that existed at Andersonville during the time it saw 13,000 Union prisoners die there. Despite all the attention and research that it has received over the years, there are a variety of factual errors that have been repeatedly presented in these historical accounts about Andersonville. As a result of more than 3000 hours of research conducted over the last three years, Guy Prentice will be pointing out some of the factual errors that will be corrected in the archeological overview and assessment report he is currently preparing for the National Park Service along with a brief overview of Andersonville’s Civil War history.
