Marshall Brothers: Architects, Boatwrights and Pillars of the Community - Speaker Program

The Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) will be presenting a program on “Marshall Brothers: Architects, Boatwrights and Pillars of the Community” featuring Marshall family descendants, Donia Smith and Ken Tucker, as part of their Spring Speaker Series. This program will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 4:00 pm at the Raney Carriage House, 126 Market Street, Apalachicola, FL. Guests are invited to hear a discussion about the many beautiful homes in Apalachicola that were built by the Marshall Brothers, as well as their boatbuilding experiences.

Donia Bulloch Smith is an eighth generation Floridian with strong roots in the Florida panhandle. Her love of genealogy stems from hearing family stories, steeped in rich history and knowledge, told by her grandmother, Eliza Marshall Register. After growing up on her Great Granddaddy Register’s turpentine farm in Woodville, she moved to the North Carolina foothills where she resided mostly on a farm for 25 years. She now lives in Apalachicola with her husband. Donia feels that it is important to honor the ancestors that came before her.

Ken Tucker is the great grandson of John Marshall. His grandfather Dwight Marshall, Sr. was John’s son and his mother Kathryn Marshall Tucker was Dwight’s daughter. When growing up he spent many weekends and extensive time in the summers in Apalachicola and St. George Island. He lives on St. George Island.

The last Spring Speaker Series event is scheduled for May 20. These Speakers events are part of a well-established and popular series by the Apalachicola Area Historical Society with speakers through May on Saturdays, mid-month, at 4pm in the Raney House Carriage House. Local and tourist history enthusiasts have gathered for these informative talks for a number of years. Previous speakers have spoken about Apalachicola’s predominantly African American North Side, Territorial City St Joseph, Early Maps of the area, Niles Register Florida History, the ice delivery industry, Cemetery Preservation and more.
