Subject: Spend an afternoon in a supportive environment freely exploring how writing can be a healing, spiritual practice that gives us the opportunity to shape or reshape our own identities.
This 1-day workshop is open to writers of all levels. We’ll move through exercises designed to push us to explore what needs healing in our lives, and look at how writing can become a spiritual practice. We’ll also work through some simple approaches to building a safe, sanctified space that supports us moving deeper.
We’ll discuss a selection of poets and writers who explore their identity and express their voice in connection to a greater unknown. What inspires them, and us, to write deeply? How can a writing practice inspire us to discover who we are more authentically? As a 16+ workshop, we will also learn from one another, practice listening deeply to each other, and then commune with ourselves—body, spirit, and mind—by writing poems, short prose pieces, and other invented forms. We’ll also spend some time sharing what we have written, and talking about strategies for continuing to keep a writing practice in our daily lives.
Workshop Leader, Jessica Plante, is a poet, writer, herbalist, and spiritual guide. She is currently writing her first non-fiction book, Journey to Soul, which is about her spiritual awakening, solo trip through central and South America, and the ways her life has subsequently changed. Her work appears in New Ohio Review, Best New Small Fictions 2016, Mississippi Review, and other publications
Guest Reader and Author, Ruth Baumann, is the author of three chapbooks: I’ll Love You Forever & Other Temporary Valentines, wildcold (forthcoming 2016) & Retribution Binary (forthcoming 2017). Her poems have been published in Colorado Review, Sonora Review, Sycamore Review, The Journal, Third Coast & others.
