Tallahassee’s Grant Peeples has rounded up some musician friends for a fun night celebrating the songs of the late John Prine. Prine, who died from Covid in April of 2020, was a legendary songwriter and performer. His eponymous first release in 1971 has had a lasting impact on folk and Americana music. The songs for the record were written while Prine was delivering mail in Chicago.
“He wrote his song ‘Sam Stone,’ in 1970,” said Peeples. He is the producer of the birthday celebration, and will perform as well. “There had been lots of war protest songs in the 60s, but nobody had written one from the shoes of a veteran returning from the Vietnam conflict. That song preempted Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Born on the 4th of July, Full Metal Jacket, and pretty much every book written from the soldier’s point of view.”
Even so, Prine will not be remembered simply as a protest singer. His songs could be extremely comedic, or shine a light into the window of a human soul. “He wrote ‘Hello in There,’ the best song ever written about what it’s like to grow old in America,” said Danny Goddard, who is also performing at the event. “He was, like, 20 years old when he did it. It’s just mind boggling that he could identify like that, at that age.”
Tallahassee phenom, Avis Berry, will perform with Goddard. “Grant called and asked if I’d like to join. Of course I am very familiar with Prine’s body of work. I’ve done Angel from Montgomery a time or two, but I’ve really enjoyed working up some other songs from his catalog.”
Other performers included in the birthday tribute are Frank Douglas and Hugh Roche.
John Prine would be 77 on October 10.
The concert will take place at The American Legion Hall at Lake Ella, 229 Lake Ella Drive, Tallahassee on Monday, October 9th . Doors are at 6:30, and the music starts at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 general admission and may be bought at the door or in advance. Tables may also be reserved and purchased in advance. The show is expected to be a popular one, so advance ticket sales are advised. Go to
