Dr. Jonathan Sheppard, director of Mission San Luis, discusses Hernando De Soto’s encounters with the Apalachee in 1539–40.
De Soto’s force spent its first winter on the North American continent in Apalachee territory, where the expedition found shelter in the abandoned houses of the Apalachee Indians, and subsisted on the bountiful produce of the land. However, the five months De Soto spent in Apalachee territory were to have unplanned consequences on the course and conduct of his expedition.
