History at High Noon: Refuges of Freedom - Free Blacks and Maroon Communities in Colonial Florida

Senior Curator Michelle Hearn examines the complexity that people of African descent faced in their pursuit of free lives in a Florida that was of political interest to France, Britain, Spain, Creeks, Seminoles, and the United States.

Self-emancipated people and free Blacks created havens of freedom in Florida generations before the Emancipation Proclamation, aligning with and assisting others in the pursuit of liberty.
