Gyotaku Fish Printing Workshop with Cyndi Lanier

In this, hands on, two day fish printing workshop, Cyndi Lanier will share the entire process she uses to create her Gyotaku artwork. After learning a brief history of Gyotaku, students will learn how to prepare fish for printing, how to make special tools for inking, how to apply ink to the fish and then how to pull detailed prints on Japanese paper. Students will have an opportunity to print multiple fish species and pull multiple prints learning to make adjustments in order to make better and more detailed prints. On the second day, students will select a print from the previous day’s work to complete. Cyndi will give a short talk on the methods she uses to create the dyed paper backgrounds that help bring her pieces to life and will have a selection of dyed papers for students to use if they wish. Students will learn to wet mount prints to cradled wood panels. Then students will have the opportunity to add any finishing touches before a UV protective varnish is added to seal the artwork. 

We will be using oil based inks so please bring an apron or smock to protect clothing.

One cradled wood panel will be provided however, if students would like to mount additional prints, they can purchase additional panels ($10 – $25 depending on size).
