Gullah Architecture: A Language of Intercultural Processes

Like the language and other crafts attributed to Gullah culture, architecture also developed within that same system of creolization processes.  Buildings of the Sea Islands reflect a blending of African and European interactions.  Gullah architectural forms, landscapes and spatial arrangements are featured in this illustrated lecture.  Professor Wells-Bowie’s presentation draws from her childhood experiences in the Sea Islands as well as funded research. Both have informed her career emphasis in the relationships between culture and architecture.
