Florida's First Highwaymen

A historically focused exhibition of paintings from 1948 to the 1960’s that tell the inspiring story of A.E. Backus and the early Highwaymen painters.

Experience the beginning of the story of the Highwaymen, a story of triumph over obstacles as talented young black artists established successful landscape painting careers in the “Jim Crow” south. Inspired and aided by Florida’s premier mid-Twentieth Century landscape painter, A.E.
