Faculty Recital - Pamela Ryan, viola

The College of Music is pleased to present faculty member Pamela Ryan, viola, in recital on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in Dohnányi Recital Hall.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Pamela Ryan, Professor of Viola at The Florida State University College of Music, received a M.M from the Conservatory of Brooklyn College (CUNY) and a D.M.A from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory (UC). She studied viola with Paul Doktor, Karen Tuttle, Masao Kawasaki (who she assisted for seven years) and Itzhak Perlman. As a student she won the Aspen Music Festival Young Artist Concerto Competition.

Professor Ryan has recorded new music chamber music for Naxos (Gulfstream was chosen as BBC Music Magazine’s US choice; MusicWeb International’s Recording of the Month and Grammophone Magazine’s superb review, May 2012), Col Legno and the Canadian Broadcasting Company (Gold Label). Her solo performance has been praised by the American Record Guide for “superb technique and musicianship.”

Ryan has also served as faculty artist for summer festivals at Aspen, Brevard, Yellow Barn, Schlern/Italy, Green Mountain, Idyllwild and Bowdoin. She was violist of the Bowling Green String Quartet, principal violist of the Southwest Florida Symphony for three years, and has served as principal violist of the Tallahassee Symphony since 1989.

By invitation, Professor Ryan gave the national collegiate viola master class at the American String Teachers Association 2008 National Conference, and performed as soloist at the national American Viola Society Congress. She also performs on the Balinese rebab, historic period viola, and jazz viola. Her live video performances of rarely played original viola caprices are on YouTube. Ryan has been honored to receive the FSU University Teaching Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her former students hold viola positions in orchestras and colleges worldwide.
