Debunking the Money Pit: A Guide to Owning a Historic House

Want to learn more about how research a historic home or property? Join the Thomasville History Center and Thomasville Landmarks for a hands-on workshop designed to introduce you to the wealth of resources at your disposal on Thursday, May 17 from 2pm until 4pm at “Debunking the Money Pit: A Guide to Owning a Historic House.” Landmarks’ Preservation Programs Manager Sophia Latz will introduce you to the ins and outs of tax incentives and preservation easements, identifying and working within a historic district and with a Historic Preservation Commission, and introduce common architectural styles of Thomasville. Ephraim Rotter, Curator of the Thomasville History Center, will lead a hands-on workshop in conducting research using the History Center’s archival collections, city directories, and historic Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps.  Participants will have the opportunity to conduct research and will leave with information for continuing the research process.

Registration is free for this workshop and interested participants are encouraged to sign up online using Eventbrite or with the Thomasville History Center, email history@rose.net, or Landmarks, email tli@rose.net.  This program will be held in the newly renovated Flowers-Roberts Basement at the Thomasville History Center and is open to all: home and property owners, contractors, real estate agents, architects, and contractors are encouraged to participate.
