Crucian Carnival Series and The Atelier: The Instructor and his Students
The Joe Center for the Arts presents two exhibits October 8-30: Michele Tabor Kimbrough’s “Crucian Carnival Series” and Tim Gagnon’s “Atelier: The Instructor and His Students.” Opening Reception Oct. 8 from 6-8pm ET.
Through brilliant watercolor, Michele Tabor Kimbrough captures the ceremonial joy, color, and character of the Crucian Carnival, a month-long celebration in the U.S.Virgin Islands that dates back to the 1800s when enslaved Africans on the island were allowed time off to celebrate Christmas. The traditions of elaborate costumes, dancing and music have become part of the annual holiday celebrations on St. Croix.
