In observance of the 60th anniversary of the Tallahassee Lunch Counter Sit-ins, Leon County Government and The Village Square proudly present the fifth annual “Created Equal.” You won’t want to miss this special evening.
On February 13, 1960, the Tallahassee Democrat covered a story: “The lunch counter in Woolworth’s was closed at noon yesterday when a group of Negroes sat down and asked to be served.” These students would go to jail for 7 long weeks to advance the cause of civil rights across America, gaining the attention of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackie Robinson, Eleanor Roosevelt – and more.
We’ll gather legends from our hometown’s civil rights movement — including the family of Patricia Stephens Due (her husband, 3 daughters and sister Priscilla who shared a narrow bed with Patricia in jail) and the Rev. Dr. Henry Steele, son of the legendary C.K. Steele. We’ll pose the question “are we sitting together now?”
Pizza, salad and drinks will be provided.
This program is supported by Florida Humanities. It is a part of the Village Square’s series Local Color, made possible by support from Bank of America.
