College of Engineering Open House

A new addition this year for older audiences, the “Speaking of Engineering” lecture series is a lineup of engineering researchers talking about solutions they are developing for real-world problems, including polymer batteries and artificial intelligence. These talks, taking place on the hour from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m., are specially-designed for the layperson who is “scientifically-curious.” Topics include:

• Sustainable materials for critical infrastructure
• Using polymers to create safer, longer-lasting batteries
• Demystifying artificial intelligence
• Building the factory of the future with additive manufacturing

The free event will offer something for all ages, with hands-on science-based exhibits, displays and activities sponsored by each of the college’s five engineering departments, including:

• 3D printers and robots
• Interactive LED sensors
• Leonardo bridge and pressure cup tests
• Oil rig setup with transportation and refining activities using household materials
• Hyperspace peddle and music
• Stable structure building activity using recyclables
• Static electricity demonstrations
• Build your own “car” with household materials and budget
• Bucky paper and fiber demo, 3D printer, drone shell and polymer demo
• Trivia games with logical solutions and a spin wheel

The Open House will also include live music in the COE atrium with hourly demos of technology-augmented performances using equipment made by our very own engineering students. A sidewalk food truck and DJ will be outside the building. Lucky Goat Coffee and grab-and-go snacks will be available inside at the COE Café.
