Cinehassee

We would like to invite you to our film festival: Cinehassee 2020.

This week our movie is “NEGRA” (See the trailer: https://vimeo.com/351539692). This is the premiere of this movie in Florida. Due to some restrictions imposed by the director and producer of the movie, it will be just available to watch in Florida for people that do not have an FSU credential. If you are not in Florida, you will be able to watch it but using your FSU credentials. This movie screening is sponsored by The Art History Museum & Cultural Heritage Studies (MCHS) program at FSU and IMCINE. I was about seven years old the first time someone called me “black” on the street. I turned around to see who they were talking to until I realized it was me. That day I understood I was black, and the laughter it caused among the people nearby made me think being a black person wasn’t that great… Was this only happening to me? Or did it happen to other black women? “Negra” shows the director in her search for exploring what it means to inhabit Mexico as a black woman. It tells the story of five afro-descendant women from southern Mexico, exposing racism, resistance and processes of self-acceptance, strategies for transcending stereotypes, and the celebration of their identity.

A Q&A session will be held on November 8th. This session will include the participation of Drs. Kristin Dowell and Erika Loic, from the FSU Department of Art History; and the director of the movie, Medhin Tewolde.
