Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963

Changing America highlights the relationship between two great movements that resulted in the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and the March on Washington in 1963.

Despite the passage of one hundred years, these two moments are profoundly linked together in a larger story of liberty and the American experience. This exhibit is presented by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History in collaboration with the American Library Association Public Programs Office. PARKING INFO

The Historic Capitol is located in the Capitol Complex, at the intersection of Apalachee Parkway and South Monroe Street. Although the museum does not have dedicated parking, there are several parking lots in the area. There is a large public parking garage in Kleman Plaza, close to the Capitol Complex. When the legislature is in session, parking can be especially challenging. Spaces for visitors with disabilities are located on west side of the House Office Building in the north side loading zone.
