Black Director’s Festival

The works of black directors are restricted and underrepresented by the cultural norms of the film industry. Join the Askew Student Life Center in celebrating their contributions. Each film played at the festival will be free to the general public! So share the news with friends and family! Dates and times are subject to change. Doors open 30 min before screenings.

Opening Ceremony

On March 6th at 8:30 pm the ASLC will kick things off with free food Olean’s Cafe, G&G Caribbean Restaurant, and Soul Vegetarian! Black-owned businesses and organizations are invited to table and sell merchandise. Our hope is to create an engaging environment in celebration of our Black Directors Festival: March 6th – 14th. Join us!

Widows

Four women are widowed after their husbands are killed during an attempted robbery. Together they must finish what their husbands couldn’t.

Boyz n the Hood

South Californian teen Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) tries to follow the strict guidance of his father (Laurence Fishburne) in a neighborhood plagued with drugs, violence, and racism.

Black Dynamite

“The Man” has killed the great kung fu fighter Black Dynamite’s brother. An insane tale of revenge ensues on the silver screen in Black Dynamite.

Rafiki

Premiering at the ASLC. Banned in Kenya for its LGBTQ+ content, Rafiki is a tale of star crossed lovers, Kena and Ziki, and their journey to each other.

Based on James Baldwin’s novel of the same name, FSU alumni Barry Jenkins’ latest love story has earned three Academy Award nominations.
