The League of Women Voters of Tallahassee

March 2021 Hot Topic

Two years ago, the City of Tallahassee did something to address climate change that we should all be proud of: The city committed to a goal of 100% public and private renewable energy use by 2050. To get there, the city pledged that by 2035 all city facilities would be using 100% renewable energy and all city light-duty vehicles and buses would be 100% electric and that the remainder of the city’s fleet would be electric as soon as the technology became available.

The more informed, committed, and enthusiastic our community is about this initiative, the greater the likelihood that we will achieve this goal in a practical and enduring manner and do our part to help preserve our local environment and the planet.

Please tune in to our March 24th Hot Topic, and learn how we got here, and what the city is doing to meet that commitment. Our guests will include Kim Ross, the Executive Director and founder of ReThink Energy Florida, and Michael Ohlsen, the City of Tallahassee’s Clean Energy Plan Manager.

ReThink Energy Florida was a leader in the coalition that asked our commissioners to take a stand against climate change and transition to 100% renewable energy. It currently houses and administers Tally 100 Together, a group of organizations (including our local league) and individuals dedicated to educating our community about this energy transition and creating a strong base of support for it to occur urgently and equitably.

Michael Ohlsen oversees the city’s efforts to transition to 100% clean energy by 2050. This includes managing the third-party consultant team that the city selected to study and identify the viable pathways forward, as well as engage the public in shaping the community’s clean energy roadmap.

Listen in and see where you fit into Tallahassee’s future.
