Museum Education Program Specialist/Living History
OPS/28-hour per week
Primary Job Description
The primary responsibilities for this position are to inform the public of the history of Mission San Luis through tours, programs, and daily “living history” interpretation. Such costumed “living history’” interpretation will include demonstrations of period crafts, skills, and chores while attired in 17th-century clothing. Training is available to all staff. This includes the history of Mission San Luis, interpretive techniques, working with people of all ages and abilities, etc.
Additional responsibilities of this position will include assisting with day to day historic maintenance tasks, including program preparation and clean up, animal husbandry, cleaning of exhibit areas, gardening, carpentry, opening and closing of reconstructed buildings, and other related tasks. As needed, incumbent will be prepared to conduct outreach programs and assist with visitor services.
Reporting Structure
This position reports to the Museum Program Supervisor. The incumbent will follow the directions of the Museum Program Supervisor regarding duty stations, event related interpretive scenarios, etc. Requests to research, initiate, or work on other tasks and projects are welcomed, but need to be approved by one of the management team members.
Additional, Incumbent-Specific Duties/Cross Training Roles
Depending on staffing, tour schedules, and seasonal tasks, the incumbent will be detailed to various sites in the historic village to interpret the story and history of Mission San Luis. Seventeenth-century gender roles dictate which areas and which tasks are done by men and women during the daily interpretation of the site. However, Mission San Luis does allow training of all staff in blackpowder firing and primitive weapons.

This position is classified OPS (Other Personnel Services). Part-time OPS personnel ARE NOT eligible for enrollment in the State of Florida employee insurance program, and cannot participate in a Social Security alternative plan.
