Museum Education Program Specialist/Living History

Primary Job Description

The primary responsibilities for this position are to inform the public of the history of Mission San Luis through tours, programs, and daily “living history” interpretation. Such costumed “living history’” interpretation will include demonstrations of period crafts, skills, and chores while attired in 17^th-century clothing. Training is available to all staff. This includes the history of Mission San Luis, interpretive techniques, working with people of all ages and abilities, etc.

Additional responsibilities of this position will include assisting with day to day historic maintenance tasks, including program preparation and clean up, animal husbandry, cleaning of exhibit areas, gardening, carpentry, opening and closing of reconstructed buildings, and other related tasks.  As needed, incumbent will be prepared to conduct outreach programs and assist with visitor services.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the Museum Program Supervisor.  The incumbent will follow the directions of the Museum Program Supervisor regarding duty stations, event related interpretive scenarios, etc.  Requests to research, initiate, or work on other tasks and projects are welcomed, but need to be approved by one of the management team members.

Additional, Incumbent-Specific Duties/Cross Training Roles

Depending on staffing, tour schedules, and seasonal tasks, the incumbent will be detailed to various sites in the historic village to interpret the story and history of Mission San Luis.  Seventeenth-century gender roles dictate which areas and which tasks are done by men and women during the daily interpretation of the site.  However, Mission San Luis does allow training of all staff in blackpowder firing and primitive weapons.

KSAs

• Ability to learn complex historical concepts and communicate this knowledge through interpretive techniques and skills
• Able to work outdoors in cold, hot, and inclement weather and to stand for long periods of time
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs, in particular Word and Excel
• Excellent communications skills, both oral [including telephone] and written
• Ability to problem-solve and pay attention to detail
• Must be outgoing and enjoy working with people and have good customer service skills
• Maintain a collegial relationship with other living history team members and staff in general
• Ability to converse in Spanish and/or learn Spanish would be helpful.

• Must be comfortable with public speaking
• Enjoys working as a team to accomplish goals
• Can relate to people of all ages and abilities
• Must be able to work weekends and holidays
• Must wear historical costume while interpreting to the public. Modern jewelry [except for medical alert items], tattoos, hairstyles, etc. are okay if they are covered in the course of the interpretive day.
• As an outdoor site, we expect our staff to be available to the public in hot and cold weather, as well as rain, unless conditions are unfavorable for our staff, volunteers, and the public.

This position is classified OPS (Other Personnel Services).  Part-time OPS personnel ARE NOT eligible for enrollment in the State of Florida employee insurance program, and cannot participate in a Social Security alternative plan.
