The communications manager oversees the planning and execution of all marketing, communications and sales campaigns, promotions, public relations, social media, website and branding activities of the Challenger Learning Center (CLC). This senior manager oversees all sales efforts including field trips, group reservations, facility rentals, memberships, camp and program registrations through the supervision of a sales associate position. Additionally, this manager oversees the graphics, advertising and publications of the CLC with the assistance of a part-time OPS staff and/or intern.

Position Responsibilities

20% Programming: Responsible for formulating and executing all aspects of programs, publicity campaigns, special events, promotions, and media opportunities to enhance the image and attendance of the CLC and its programs. Including, but not limited to film launches, anniversary events, fundraisers, etc. Ensuring events and programs are listed on community calendars, social media, and partners’ promotional outlets.

20% Public Relations: Responsible for writing, editing, marketing, and publishing publications of and for the CLC for public relations, public information, donor and member relations, university relations and board of directors. Responsible for providing information to regional newspapers, television stations, radio stations, newsletters, websites, blogs, and university publications about the CLC’s activities, programs, and events for the purpose of securing non-paid media appearances and coverage. Including, but not limited to press releases, news articles, news advisories, photo opportunities, etc. Develop and oversee the creation and design of all graphic, visual and audio products, collaterals, and promotions of the CLC including multimedia advertisements, website, signage, brochures, swag, letterhead and business cards, email signatures, weekly e-blasts, television and radio spots, etc.

20% Community Relations: Serve as the CLC’s spokesperson or secure and prepare the appropriate staff member with the resources and information needed to serve as the CLC’s spokesperson on a specific topic. Develop and maintain partnerships (nationally, regionally, and locally) to cross promote and assist with the development and exposure of the CLC’s products and programs. Responsible for frequent contact with CLC members, board of advisors, members of the university community, teachers, students, public and members of the media to promote the CLC’s image. Produce and edit content, write articles, including, but not limited to CLC Fan Page, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and interactive exhibits housed at CLC. Update and increase the SEO and Google analytics of ChallengerTLH.com. Maintain email database, signature graphic arts and send weekly e-blasts.

20% Advertising (digital, online, print, etc.): Responsible for managing annual marketing budget and interpreting rules and policies to negotiate best prices. Interpret national research and reach of media outlets to effectively manage the budget. Negotiate promotions and fair rates for the advertisement of CLC programs and events. Adhere to university and departmental policies, procedures and best practices for purchasing, fiscal management, and human resource management.

10% Sales: Supervise and serve as back up for the sales associate (USPS position), graphic arts and marketing OPS employees and interns. Develop, organize, and oversee the execution of sales plans specifically for group sales, field trips, memberships, and facility rentals. Set, develop, and report to the CLC Director the CLC’s program activity, revenue, and projections of the sales department.

10% Development: Support the development and implementation of the CLC’s annual resource development plan with strategies and action plans for soliciting corporations, foundations, governmental agencies, board members and individual donors. Work with the CLC director, CLC board of directors, and the Foundations (FAMU & FSU) to identify, research, and write sponsorship proposals. Provide timely reports, thank you letters, etc. to donors, university departments and awarding agencies to maintain compliance and good relations. Identify and present and/or participate in special events and/or activities where current and potential donors or partners may be.
