OPS Museum Education Program Specialist: (Working Title: Living History Interpreter)
Division of Historical Resources, Mission San Luis
$13.50 per hour, 28 hours per week
Mission San Luis announces the availability of six part-time positions to provide costumed interpretation and assist with daily Education Department operations.
Assisting with day-to-day museum operations, including:
Performing site opening/closing procedures, light housekeeping, and light maintenance assistance
Informing the public of all ages and abilities about the history of Mission San Luis through giving guided tours, programs, and daily interpretation
Such costumed “living history’” interpretation will include demonstrations of period crafts, skills, and chores while attired in 17th century clothing attire.
Assisting with day to day historic maintenance tasks, including program preparation and clean up, animal husbandry, cleaning of exhibit areas, gardening, proper fire techniques, carpentry, opening and closing of reconstructed buildings, daily upkeep of costumes and cleaning shoes, consistently conducting historical conversation, and other related tasks.
The incumbent will maintain neatness and cleanliness in all areas [historic and non-historic] including shared office, kitchen, and living spaces.
Contributing to educational programs, outreach, and special events
Performing collections care and assisting in collections management
Performing research on the site’s history and its museum collections
Record-keeping and administrative tasks as needed
As needed, incumbent will be prepared to conduct outreach programs, docent historic site tours, maintain and order supplies for workshops and historical activities, complete reports on programming activities, and assist with visitor services [ticket and shop sales and orientation], and other duties as required.
Assisting with other Department of State activities or initiatives as needed
High School diploma or equivalent
Resume and cover letter detailing education and job related experience
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and some nights
Bachelor's degree in history, museum studies, archeology, anthropology, education, theater, liberal arts, humanities, art history, communications, hospitality, or other related field
Experience working or volunteering in a museum
Ability to converse in Spanish or other languages and/or learn Spanish
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Ability to learn complex historical concepts and communicate this knowledge through interpretive techniques and skills
Excellent oral and written communications skills [including telephone and radio]
Ability to take a given historical figure and use research skills and character development techniques to create a persona
Ability to wear historical costume while interpreting to the public. Modern jewelry [except for medical alert items], tattoos, hairstyles, etc. are okay if they are covered in the course of the interpretive day.
Public speaking skills and able and willing to give tours to large groups of people
Ability to be outgoing and engaging, and have excellent customer service skills
Ability to maintain a collegial relationship with other living history team members, volunteers, and staff.
Ability to relate to people of all ages and abilities
Ability to work with people and being a team player to accomplish goals
Ability to work both independently as well as part of a team
Ability to problem-solve, multitask, and pay attention to detail
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions including cold, hot, and inclement weather.
Ability to work in spaces and with objects that might be dirty or dusty
Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time
Ability to bend, stoop, squat, reach, stretch, and/or twist
Ability to perform light housekeeping duties, such as dusting, sweeping, mopping and cleaning restrooms
Ability to lift, move, carry, and/or push items weighing up to 30
Ability to understand and follow established regulations, procedures, and policies
Proficiency in standard office software, including Microsoft Word
