A historically focused exhibition of paintings from 1948 to the 1960’s that tell the inspiring story of A.E. Backus and the early Highwaymen painters.
Experience the beginning of the story of the Highwaymen, a story of triumph over obstacles as talented young black artists established successful landscape painting careers in the “Jim Crow” south. Inspired and aided by Florida’s premier mid-Twentieth Century landscape painter, A.E. Backus, the early Highwaymen applied natural artistic ability, charisma, generosity, and business genius to overcome obstacles and make a living as landscape painters. Florida’s First Highwaymen presents work from 1948 through the 1960’s by A.E. Backus, Alfred Hair, Harold Newton, Mary Ann Carroll, Livingston Roberts, R.A. McLendon, James Gibson, Al Black, Sam Newton, and Willie Daniels.
Suggested admission is $5, members and children free. Related programming provided free of charge.
