Brothers and Sisters, Exhibition of African American paintings by Marina Brown

Brothers and Sisters, Exhibition of African American paintings by Marina Brown

Presented by Meek-Eaton Black Archives of FAMU at Union Bank Buildiing

Art Opening at Historic Union Bank, part of Meek-Eaton Black Archives

An opening reception, March 24 from 6-8 PM, will usher in the new exhibition called, Between Us: Brothers and Sisters, at the historic Union Bank building, 219 Apalachee Pwky, sponsored by the Meek-Eaton Black Archives Museum.

The exhibition, a collection of nearly 30 paintings by Marina Brown, chronicles in portraits and vibrant narrative images the African Diaspora, from Kenya, the Congo, Ethiopia, to the New World, Brazil, Cuba, the Caribbean, and finally to African American life in the American South. The installation will be on display from March 24-June 30.

As part of the Tour of Museums in Tallahassee, the Union Bank, built in 1830, is a distinctly beautiful venue. Painted blue with delicate columns, and just a block south of the State Capital, it was present when many of the events pictured in the show occurred.

Marina Brown is a watercolorist whose work is widely shown and whose interest in the African American experience spans the period of slavery and Jim Crow to more contemporary everyday life, church life, musical influences, the juke joints of the 1930s, dancers, singers, and the simple beauty of people with warm brown skin and the myriad colors that dance within it.

The opening, March 24th, and exhibition are free and open to the public.
