FREE – 6 PM Reception / 6:30 pm Presentation – “Setting the Table: Ceramics, Dining, and Cultural Exchange in AndalucĂa and La Florida” by Dr. Kathryn L. Ness
Join us at Mission San Luis when Dr. Kathryn L. Ness presents research from her new book, "Setting the Table: Ceramics, Dining, and Cultural Exchange in AndalucĂa and La Florida." Her presentation will cover the cultural exchange and identity formation in the early modern Spanish Atlantic. Using documentary records and archaeological collections from three 18th-century households in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain and St. Augustine, Florida, she examines how individuals negotiated political and social changes in the 18th century Spanish Empire and the increasingly global trade network of the time. Her findings indicate that similar and almost simultaneous changes in Spanish and Floridian households reflect a new Spanish-Atlantic sense of identity that amalgamated fashions, tastes, and traditions from throughout the Atlantic World.
Kathryn L. Ness is Curator of Collections at Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts. She earned her PhD in archaeology from Boston University and BA in anthropology and art history from the College of William and Mary. She has worked on archaeological sites and with collections in Virginia, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Spain. Her research interests include cultural exchange, Atlantic history, ceramics, and early modern dining practices.
Come meet Dr. Ness at a reception beginning at 6 pm. The presentation is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. Please share this event with your friends!
