To mark the 100th anniversary of the United States entry into World War I, the Florida Historic Capitol Museum is pleased to host Over Here and Over There: The United States, Florida, and World War I.
Join the Museum at the exhibit opening featuring Julia F. Irwin, author of Making the World Safe: The American Red Cross and a Nation’s Humanitarian Awakening. Her presentation uncovers the fascinating history of American humanitarian aid and shows how international assistance first became a tool of U.S. foreign relations. She will discuss the pivotal role of the American Red Cross during the First World War era, and how ordinary U.S. citizens participated in their nation’s unprecedented foreign relief efforts for war-torn Europe.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the exhibit and complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served. The program begins at 6 p.m The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited, so please RSVP at the ticket link on this page to reserve your spot.
"Over Here and Over There" depicts WWI from the twin perspectives of those on the home front and those at war. "Over Here" will be on display at the reception, along with artifacts, photographs, and interpretive panels that highlight Florida’s role in the Great War.

Florida Historic Capitol Museum

The Historic Capitol is located in the Capitol Complex, at the intersection of Apalachee Parkway and South Monroe Street. Although the museum does not have dedicated parking, there are several parking lots in the area. There is a large public parking garage in Kleman Plaza, close to the Capitol Complex. When the legislature is in session, parking can be especially challenging. Spaces for visitors with disabilities are located on west side of the House Office Building in the north side loading zone.
