How I Became a Pirate

How I Became a Pirate

Presented by School of Theatre at Florida State at The Fallon Theatre

Arrrrrgh! Climb aboard and join Jeremy Jacob as he sets sail with those scurvy pirates Braid Beard, Sharktooth, and Pirate Pierre. Jeremy Jacob and the band of misfit pirates take an exciting and musical journey travelling across the seas on the Jolly Roger as together they scour the earth on the lookout for the best place to bury their treasure! Along the way, Jeremy Jacob learns about pirate chores, the pirate code, and some pirate songs, but most importantly, he learns the importance of friendship and teamwork. So weigh your anchor and learn how you too can become a pirate! This fun and exciting musical is based on the popular children’s book “How I Became a Pirate” written by Melinda Long with illustrations by David Shannon.

This production features School of Theatre students Alexandra Thomas (Jeremy Jacob), Michael Bradley (Captain Braid Beard), Christian Douglass (Pirate Seymour), Ariel Baron (Maxine the Pirate), Jamonté Bruten (Pirate Pierre), Joseph Merendino (Swill the Pirate), Devin Reardon (Pirate Scurvy Dog), and Kyle Kniseley (Sharktooth the Pirate). How I Became a Pirate features direction from MFA Directing candidate Christine Hansen, music direction from FSU faculty member Gayle Seaton, scenic design by Rebekkah Meixner-Hanks, costume design by MFA Costume Design candidate Amy Avila, and lighting design by Nate Wheatley.

Christine Hansen shared what she enjoys most about Theatre for Young Audiences saying, “children can learn to love literature through joyful encounters with theatre in the same way they learn through picture books and later chapter books and novels. Children become lifelong theatre lovers because someone has shared the magic of live performance with them. When a parent, grandparent, teacher, or theatre professional takes a child to see a play, they can enjoy it together and talk about their shared experience. FSU’s production of How I Became a Pirate is our chance to provide the magic and encourage that love of theatre in our young audiences. We have had the most delightful time bringing this story to life and I believe the audience will experience that same delight as it learns with Jeremy Jacobs how to be a pirate!”
