Food has served as an inspiration to artists for thousands of years, from images of game animals painted on prehistoric cave walls to ancient mosaics of fruit and fish on the floors of Pompeiian villas.

Seventeenth century Dutch painters masterfully rendered sumptuous scenes of tables laid with fine linens and serving ware, overflowing with delicacies. In contrast, Dorthea Lang’s Depression era photographs illustrate the intersection of humanity, hunger, and the American agricultural industry. Whether it’s pop-art soup cans or an impressionistic basket of apples, food related artworks are embedded in our culture.
