The Civil War: Loss & Peril on the Forgotten Coast

The Carrabelle History Museum presents “The Civil War: Loss & Peril on the Forgotten Coast” on Saturday, May 20, 10:00 am-12:00 pm at the Upstairs Meeting Room at C-Quarters Marina, 501 St. James Avenue (US 98), Carrabelle, FL. Come discover another compelling story about the loss and perils of the Civil War along the Forgotten Coast with historian and author, Dale Cox. There is no admission fee for this program.

Explore why May of 1863 was a perilous time to be on the Forgotten Coast with two major tragedies – the explosion of the warship “CSS Chattahoochee” on the Apalachicola River and the hurricane that hit the coast between Apalachicola and St. Marks. The CSS Chattahoochee was the most powerful operational Civil War warship to cruise the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint River system and the deadly explosion that wrecked this warship was Florida\’s greatest naval disaster of the Civil War.

Dale Cox, a Southern writer and historian, is the author of more than one dozen books on Southern history and culture including his newest book, \”The Fort at Prospect Bluff: History of the Negro Fort on the Apalachicola River\”. His acclaimed Civil War study – \”The Battle of Marianna, Florida\” – was named best in its category by Civil War Books & Authors. Cox has been named to the prestigious Bonnie Blue Society for Southern writers.
