Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Comes to Life

Guests at this talk will learn about the inspiring life of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune (1875–1955) and her important legacy and impact on Florida history. The program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so please RSVP at the ticket link on this page.

Offered in conjunction with the Florida Humanities Council, and the Meek-Eaton Black Archives, Dr. Bethune will be vividly brought to life by author and motivational speaker Ersula Knox Odom. Refreshments will be served

Among many other contributions—founder of Bethune-Cookman University, New Deal government official, and president of the National Association of Colored Women to name just a few—Dr. Bethune is remembered for advancing the education of African American children and young adults. Despite her work, disparities in students’ educational achievement are still documented today, especially in low-income areas. After the presentation, guests are invited to join the discussion about how we can improve the educational system so that all children have the best opportunity to learn.
