The musicians will include many of the great performers that have been a part of either the Don Juan Band, the Sonic Rangers, and others Don has played with in a lifetime of making music in Tallahassee and around the world.

Don Juan (Fortner) and the Sonic Rangers celebrate Don’s 70th birthday and the album releases of “Innerstellar” and the re-release of the 2003 album “Live at Shares” featuring Avis Berry on vocals.
The musicians will include many of the great performers that have been a part of either the Don Juan Band, the Sonic Rangers, and others Don has played with in a lifetime of making music in Tallahassee and around the world.

Don Juan has a unique sound that is filled with soul. Don played trumpet in Escambia High School and played for the New York Worlds Fair in 1965 and at Rockefeller Center. Don attended, Pensacola Junior College, Tallahassee Community College, University of West Florida, and Florida State University before becoming a trumpet player for the 527th United States Air Force band squadron from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam War. He toured Korea with the rock band the “Beautiful People”, played for the Original Drifters rock/soul band and such famous musicians as Nat Adderly, Hubert Sumlin, Ira Sullivan, and Red Rodney among others, and over 100 other professional and touring bands in a variety of genres in a lifetime of music. Don was the leader of the Don Juan Band in Tallahassee from 2003 to 2010 with Avis Berry and Charles Ferguson on vocals. He played on famous country songwriter Linda Hargrove’s last CD on the song “I’ll live on”. Don retired after 29 years in 2010 from the Warren D. Allen Music Library at Florida State University where he was the Collection Development Associate.
Don Juan is presently performing with the Jazz duo Smooth Sailin at the Sweet Magnolia Inn and the band Garnet and Soul featuring Mary Hoffman on vocals.
